Sumit’s Journey Home: How Love and Support, Reunited a Family in Jharkhand

Meet Sumit, an 11-year-old boy from a small tribal community in Lateher, Jharkhand, one of the poorest states in India. When Sumit was just 8 years old, tragedy struck—the sudden loss of his father left his family in crisis. His mother, working as a laborer, faced an impossible situation. Despite her efforts, the burden of providing for Sumit and his younger sisters, Shanaya and Sanita, became too heavy to bear. In a heartbreaking decision, Sumit was sent to an orphanage, while his sisters were taken in by relatives who couldn’t afford to care for them all.

This is an all-too-common story for families in Jharkhand, where poverty often forces difficult choices. Miracle Foundation began working in the region, committed to strengthening families and reuniting children with their loved ones. It was then that Sumit’s family was identified as one in need of support.

Our team evaluated Sumit’s family using the comprehensive Thrive Scale assessment and uncovered the deep socio-economic challenges they faced. While finances were the most pressing issue, our social workers saw that healing would require more than just financial assistance—it would take emotional support and long-term stability to bring Sumit home for good.

Working closely with Sumit’s mother, we provided counseling to help her overcome her fears about being unable to provide for him again. Slowly, with emotional support, their bond was rebuilt, and hope began to return. We helped enroll Sumit’s mother in a local healthcare program and secured a government assistance card, ensuring food security for the family. We also connected her with a self-help group in her community, giving her a support system and a path toward financial independence.

The family was provided with goats to create a sustainable income. Additionally, Sumit’s education was sponsored, easing the financial strain and ensuring he could continue his studies. Meanwhile, Sumit’s sisters Shanaya and Sarita were brought back home, and they are now enrolled in a local school so the family can be together once again.

Work is also underway to repair their home after being delayed due to financial struggles. Sumit’s mother is committed to creating a safe, stable home for her children, and with the support she’s received, that dream is becoming a reality.

Today, Sumit is back where he belongs—home with his family. Each morning, he heads off to school, his backpack slung over his shoulder, filled with excitement for the future. His mother watches proudly, knowing that her children are finally where they are meant to be—together.

Sumit’s story is more than just a reunion—it’s a restoration of hope, stability, and love for an entire family.
